Plus you can download extra costumes for your characters… if you’re into that sort of thing. Clocking in at around 60 hours for a basic playthrough means this is a meaty experience, not only that but the game offers it’s own set of achievements and trophies to earn. While in this modern age of online multiplayer, various modes and all types of add-ons this may seem spartan it’s not like the game’s story is short. In terms of content, the game basically just offers a single player story mode. My own gripe with the combat is that the game does a poor job explaining the basics, jumping straight into tutorials for the advanced techniques, kind of like being asked to run before you can walk. The shear strength of the enemies forces you to make the right decision with every attack as a one or two mistakes can quickly result in the loss of your party (hey kinda of like Fire Emblem!). The combat, while being turn based is definitely not slow. And that’s definitely not a bad thing as the genre has been strangely absent on consoles in recent years so it is nice to sit down for a classic experience.

The game does take some inspiration from both series for its presentation and story but not when it comes to the gameplay, where it’s actually more akin to a classic turn based RPG. Now you’re probably saying “Hey this is cool and all, but it sure doesn’t sound like Fire Emblem or Shin Megami Tensei”, and you’d be right.
These are activated when a character’s move or attack is well paired with another member of your party and the longer the session, the more powerful the attack will be. Instead you’ll have to use Session Attacks to take down your foes. While in traditional RPG’s simply getting into a pattern of attack, defend, heal will usually win you the day this isin’t so in TMS♯FE, as the game’s enemies are often too powerful to fall for this tried and true method. Not only that but weapons and abilities can also be boosted which is a must in TMS♯FE’s brutal combat arenas. It’s the interaction between the ‘normal’ characters and these Mirages that gives TMS♯FE its unique flair as you’ll not be levelling up your avatar but his Mirage as well. Fan favorites like Chrom and Tharja are present though in very different forms that fans of the classic Fire Emblem games may remember as this time they are in their Mirage guise but don’t seem to remember why (every RPG needs a bit of memory loss right?). Now, it’s not just a bunch of Japanese teenagers heading out to save the world (that would be ridiculous) as the main cast of characters are also Mirage Masters, which means they can summon and control powerful allies in combat, allies who just happen to hail from the Fire Emblem series. This Performa is desired by the game’s villains who hail from an alternate dimension called the Idolasphere and it’s up to Itsuki and his friends to save the day. In this world, everyone has within themselves an element called Performa which is seemingly enhanced by talented individuals. The story of TMS♯FE (so much better than typing it all out) follows Itsuki Aoi, a young adult whose friends are all, in some way, part of the entertainment industry, namely the Japanese pop-idol scene. But how does it work in practice? Read on! Featuring the combined efforts of Atlus and Nintendo this game was destined to be an RPG fans’ dream come true, especially with the avant-guarde concept of fusing the worlds of Shin Megami Tensei and Fire Emblem.
Announced way back in January 2013, Tokyo Mirage Sessions ♯FE finally makes it’s North American debut over three years after it’s announcement. RPG fans on the Wii U have waited a long time for this one.
